Google Earth Possiblilities

Postby Ahusk » Sat Jan 31, 2009 10:30 pm

I recently discoverd that it is possible to share waypoints, routes and tracks between google earth and my humminbird chartplotter.

The attachment below is a track recorded on my chartplotter of the Santiam River this summer. You can actually go mess with the touring settings in Google earth and get it to give you a little tour of the river. I just thought it was kind of cool. While I don't really think you should try navigating a river by GPS, if you had these for all the rivers around at least you would know which side of the islands to go around.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but it looks like you spent more time out of the river than in it. A problem that I frequently have with the GPS in my boat.... :?

I am 99 percent sure that the gps track is correct, the Santiams have changed that much since the photos were taken in 2005. There are some spots that have had an amazing amount of dirt removed in just the last year. It makes it kind of fun, everytime the water goes up an back down you have some new river to run.

When running the Salmon river my gps shows me about 50' out of the water half the time. It tracks true though when checking my path on the way back. I'm not sure whats going on with that.... :?

I like that google earth thing you did though. Technology marches on.... 8-)

Boatbucks,

Thats cool. Can you show us the course you took on Sunday up the 2 mile rapid ? I'd like to see your emergency parking spot. ;)

Point #753 is a "No Parking Zone" or maybe "Compact Only" Either way, don't go there.
